Using page accessories for visual pizazz
Modern design inherently uses fewer embellishments, and that’s what I generally prefer. There are times that I use accessories in moderation—usually because the photos are not the best and little visual distraction actually helps! And, of course, your pages should be an expression of YOU, so don’t worry about any hard and fast rules.. No matter how many page accessories you prefer—none, just a few, or exuberant bunches—remembering some basic design principles will help you make the maximum impact. I’ll use “Design 101” principles with the acronym CARP to help you remember. These one-word prompts can guide you in virtually any design situation! Contrast. Don’t drop a dark accessory over a dark area. Make sure you can easily see the accessory. For example, I wouldn’t use a black cat on the black background paper. Alignment. Line up the accessory with some other page element, if possible. It doesn’t have to be close the other element—it just needs to relate to it in some way. For example, the retro pumpkin’s left edge is also the left edge of the text. Repetition. Repeating a theme or colors in the accessories gives the page unity. In this example, all of the accessories share common colors. Proximity. Think about the placement of your accessories in relation to other elements. In the “max” page, the stripes serve as visual anchors and all the accessories are position near (or on) them. The Rule of Three: In design, it is generally best to use three elements, or an odd number if you want to use more. Try three accessories on a layout and see how balanced and restful it feels! Text as an accessory: You may have noticed one other difference in the “max” layout: Because the accessories were so bold, I also bolded up the font for balance. On simpler pages, the font itself can add weight and interest. There are times the headline may be the only accessory. Themed fonts can be great, on a simple page, but don’t let them complete with the accessories. Choose carefully, but have fun! |
